Program to improve students’ study skills

BooksSummer is no time to slack off on your studies which is why Whitby School and Successful Study Skills 4 Students (S4) have announced a summer offering of S4’s popular study skills workshop for middle school students.

This is the second time the research-based S4 student workshop series has been hosted by Whitby School. The workshops foster academic achievement by teaching students key study strategies that help them learn while reducing stress.

The workshop is open to all area students who are entering grades fifth through eighth. Classes will be held on Monday through Friday, July 22 through 25, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Whitby School, 969 Lake Avenue. The dynamic workshops are taught by accredited teachers and class size is limited to 15 students. The small class size allows for more focused and individualized attention to be given to each participating student.

The S4 program is founded on educational research and evidence-based studies. Its highly interactive approach is designed to clearly demonstrate how to apply students’ own curriculum to the strategies they learn. S4’s workshops are continually refreshed and updated to stay relevant to students’ academic experiences. Many students will even benefit from a refresher course to strengthen their skills and recalibrate their approach to their studies.

“Learning proven methods for studying and schoolwork management can be of immeasurable value to students, and summer is the perfect time for students to step back and recalibrate their approach to their studies,” said Jim Irzyk, director of enrichment and co-curricular programs at Whitby. “We look forward to giving students the opportunity to learn these critical skills for success, before the new school year.”

Michelle Sagalyn, president of S4 said, “We are excited to offer the S4 workshops at Whitby School again this summer. Whether students are facing a transition into middle school or just looking to improve their overall academic experience, we offer tools that can help them succeed. Implementing even a single new skill has been shown to boost students’ motivation and academic performance.”

The S4 program is specifically designed to provide students with the skills and strategies needed for academic confidence, motivation and preparation, particularly as they move up to the next grade level, where academic workload increases, independent work is encouraged and expectations rise. Benefits of study skills include better classroom engagement, increased focus and confidence, reduced anxiety and stress, strategies for longer retention, better preparation for class, tests and projects, increased ability to synthesize information, enhanced critical thinking skills, increased confidence and an independent approach to learning.

Students in the S4 workshop will learn foundational study skills for time management, organization and executive functioning, including: goal setting, how to use a planner, notetaking methods, self advocacy, active reading and listening techniques, understanding main ideas and important details, using visuals, summarizing to learn and long-term project and test preparation strategies.

S4 supplies all materials, including those for at-home support.

The seven and one-half hour five-session workshop costs $395. For more information contact S4 at 203-307-5455 or e-mail [email protected]
