Greenwich may join the fight for common sense gun laws

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

Earlier this year the Connecticut legislature passed measures to strengthen gun regulations.

These include an expanded assault weapons ban, prohibiting the sale of large capacity magazines, new permit requirements for buying long guns and ammunition and, most importantly, universal background checks.

In contrast, action in Congress on common sense gun regulation has been elusive. Republicans in the House and Senate are blocking universal background checks despite overwhelming public support and a bipartisan majority vote in favor of them from the Senate.

The Greenwich Council Against Gun Violence has been working to express the voice of our community in support of legislation to reduce gun violence. Recently, we hand-delivered a letter to Congress signed by 140 Greenwich residents. Soon we will be petitioning our Board of Selectmen to join with Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), the bipartisan national coalition of mayors who are working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands.

The council will be collecting petition signatures at the Greenwich Sidewalk Sales this weekend, and distributing literature on gun violence prevention. Greenwich residents can also sign the petition by visiting us on Facebook at

The Sandy Hook shootings that took the lives of 26 students and educators happened in a community much like ours; we feel a moral obligation to demonstrate our solidarity with Newtown. Joining MAIG is a way to demonstrate that the “Connecticut effect” will not go away.

If you agree, please stop by our table at the Sidewalk Sales and sign the petition.
