Becker Salon is casting the spotlight on community members who step up and make a difference with its recently established Becker Salon Leadership Award to honor outstanding leaders in the area.

The award is given to top leaders, male or female, of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations of any size in Fairfield and Westchester counties. Leaders are chosen who are successfully fulfilling a mission and who demonstrate passion and commitment to a cause. Four leaders will be honored this year.

“We want to recognize those who do so much to make our communities better,” said Becker Chicaiza, owner of the salon. “This is our way to say thank you and give back to those leaders who do not often receive recognition for their efforts.” Award winners will receive a complimentary Becker Salon experience — a complete haircut, color and style — and a plaque and a donation to Kids in Crisis.

Shari Shapiro, executive director of Kids in Crisis, is the first recipient of the 2013 Becker Salon Leadership Award. The salon has long supported Kids in Crisis and chose Ms. Shapiro for her outstanding work.

Connecticut’s only facility for children newborn to age 17, Kids in Crisis provides free, temporary shelter, therapeutic counseling, comprehensive medical care and specialized educational support for children struggling with a wide range of issues including abuse, neglect, abandonment, family health issues and family conflict. Since its founding in 1978, Kids in Crisis has helped more than 112,000 families and children through temporary shelters, crisis intervention services or community programs throughout Fairfield County.

Three additional leaders will be selected through the year. Becker Salon will enable clients to cast a vote for their choice of leaders through its website, BeckerSalon.com and social media – Facebook.com/BeckerSalon. Mr. Chicaiza, along with Deborah Elam of GE, will assist in the final decision.

Becker Salon celebrated its fifth anniversary last year. Named one of the five top salons in Greenwich by Beauty & Style Magazine, the salon has developed a large following in the region.

Mr. Chicaiza pledges that he and his staff carefully adhere to their mission, which is to highlight the beauty of everyone who enters the salon with the magic touch of their hands.
