This month at Sweet Lisa’s: Tasty treats bring bright smiles

“Sweet tooth” will take on a whole new meaning this month as Lisa and Stephen Maronian, owners of Sweet Lisa’s Exquisite Cakes, donate 10% of the company’s June sales to Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity.

Anyone who mentions Operation Smile when they place an order in June will be helping to provide new smiles to children worldwide suffering from cleft lip or cleft palate.

Besides a passion for creating custom pastry masterpieces, the Maronians also love to pay-it-forward by donating cakes, cookies, cupcakes and other sweet treats for numerous charity events and fund-raisers throughout the year. So, the Maronians said that working with Operation Smile was a natural fit.

“This is a cause close to our hearts because we know firsthand the power of a smile to a child for our close personal friends,” Ms. Maronian said. “We have attended an Operation Smile Benefit previously at Lisa and Mat Lori’s home and were moved by the work of their family with Operation Smile and the compassion of the medical volunteers. It is our honor and privilege to help.”

The Lori family, who have been friends with the Maronians for more than nine years, have been supporters of Operation Smile for the past four years. The Loris’ three sons, Zachary, Luke and Griffin, were all born with a condition called facial paralysis.

Their surgeon, who performed life-changing transplant surgery, is also a medical volunteer for Operation Smile.

This inspired Ms. Lori in 2011 to launch an international fund-raising initiative with Operation Smile called The Three Little Bears, named after her children. To learn more about the Lori family’s efforts with the initiative, visit operationsmile.org/bears.

Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft condition. It is estimated that one in 10 children born with a cleft dies before their first birthday. Children born with clefts are often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile.

With the help of medical volunteers and generous supporters, Operation Smile provides free surgeries for children around the world to heal their smiles and transform their lives. For as little as $240, the cost of a cleft lip surgery, a child’s life can be changed forever.
