Greenwich High football’s opponents set for 2013 season

Although it’s only June, it’s never too early to start thinking about football. Earlier today, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference posted the football schedule for the 2013 season and Greenwich High School will be looking to make some serious noise in both the FCIAC and class LL.

Greenwich High School will be playing 11 regular season games this season, with five home games. Big Red will get the season rolling with a huge game at Cardinal Stadium against Southern Connecticut Conference foe West Haven High School. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.

And the schedule doesn’t get any easier from there. A week later, Big Red plays its first road game of the year against Darien High School, who finished the regular season last year with a 7-3 record. Only six days later, the Cardinals return home to play a key FCIAC game against rival New Canaan High School at 7 p.m.

Last year the Rams finished 8-2 in the FCIAC and 9-3 overall. They beat Avon 16-7 in last year’s class L tournament before falling to Windsor in the semis 27-21.

On Oct. 5, Greenwich will play Trinity Catholic High School, last year’s surprise team that finished 8-2 in the FCIAC and 8-3 overall. The Crusaders qualified for the CIAC class S tournament last year and fell to North Branford in the quarterfinals.

Other games Greenwich will play at Cardinal Stadium this fall will be against Norwalk High School (Oct. 11), Fairfield Warde High School (Oct. 26) and Westhill High School (Nov. 8).

On the road, the Cardinals will battle Trumbull High School (Oct. 18), Bridgeport Central High School (Nov. 1), Danbury High School (Nov. 15) and will finish the regular season with its annual Thanksgiving Day game in Westport and battle perennial powers Staples High School. The Wreckers finished the regular season 10-1 overall and lost to Norwich Free Academy in the class LL semifinals.

Don’t forget that the annual Red & White football game will take place this year June 15 at Cardinal Stadium. The football game will take place at 10 a.m. and there will be a BBQ after the friendly contest.
