“Celebrating Hope” is the theme of a June 7 Alzheimer’s benefit to be hosted by Scott Mitchell, owner of Richards on Greenwich Avenue, where the event will take place.

“We’ve hosted many benefits here, for schools and various charities, but this is special,” Mr. Mitchell said. “It’s the first time there’s ever been a benefit in Greenwich for Alzheimer’s disease, and lately, it seems there’s more and more reason to hope that Alzheimer’s can be cured, and someday, ended.

“The Mitchell family is very fortunate,” Mr. Mitchell added. “We’ve always believed in giving back.”

The variety of Mr. Mitchell’s activities and leadership in giving back is impressive.

He is vice chairman of Sound Waters — an environmental, educational program which teaches youngsters to respect and preserve Long Island Sound. He is also active on behalf of Villa Maria, a school for children with learning disabilities, along with the YMCA and YWCA of Greenwich.

“We’ve hosted many, many parties and fund-raisers here in the store, and if there’s a way to help underserved children or adults, we’ll take it on,” Mr. Mitchell said.

“It’s something that we Mitchells have always believed is the right thing to do. My uncle, for example is on the board of Greenwich Hospital. A close friend of my dad’s just built a hospital in Houston in memory of his father, who had Alzheimer’s.”

Mr. Mitchell and his wife continue this tradition through their children. They have two daughters and a son, 15, 13 and nine, respectively. Their son recently painted the bottom of the Sound Waters boat to allow it to get back in the water.

“This fund-raiser is close to home because it’s for the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association,” Mr. Mitchell said. “They’re doing a wonderful job, with caregiver support groups, raising funds for research, and educational workshops. I’m really impressed by the time and effort that so many Greenwich volunteers are devoting to make the June 7 event a success.

“I’m sure it will be a memorable evening, because while we’re having fun, we’ll also be helping for ways to control this disease,” he added. “I’m so proud to be host to a landmark event in Greenwich. A great group of people and sponsors are making it happen and what better place to have it than Richards?”

Celebrating Hope to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter, will take place on Friday, June 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Richards, 359 Greenwich Avenue.
