Town invited to enjoy Tent Weekend festivities

Get ready to kick off summer this weekend at the Second Congregational Church’s Tent Weekend event with offerings for residents of all ages.

The community is invited to attend the festivities, which take place Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, and will include a jazz concert, ice cream social, tag sale, children’s talent show, and picnic, along with a traditional worship service.

“Tent Weekend is always a highlight in our church year,” said Rev. Maxwell Grant, senior minister at the church. “Early June in Greenwich is summer at its most beautiful. What better way to give thanks and to enjoy it with our friends and neighbors?”

Each day of the tent event offers a different variety of activities. On Friday, June 7, the jazz concert and ice cream social will be held. Those attending may bring picnic suppers to eat on the lawn beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ice cream will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. Beverages will be provided.

The Greenwich High School Jazz band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, June 8, the festivities include a tag sale, followed by a talent show. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Act II Boutique, a public consignment shop managed by the church’s Women’s Fellowship, will hold a benefit tag sale.

Items available are expected to include clothing, housewares, furniture, baby accessories and gently-used sports gear. From 4 to 6 p.m., children will provide a talent show under the tent.

To wrap up the weekend on Sunday, June 9, the church will hold its annual service at 10 a.m. under the tent, including a sermon by Rev. Grant entitled Bread for the Journey, part of a sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer.

The picnic, following the service, will begin at about 11 a.m. and offer fun, fellowship, refreshments and games.

Events will be held on the green under or adjacent to a tent behind the church, at 139 E. Putnam Avenue.  Admission is free. Folding chairs will be provided under the tent. In case of rain, events will be held in the church.
