Greenwich softball beats NFA 2-1 to advance in CIAC class LL tourney

Although the game started a day later than they expected, the Greenwich High School softball team won its Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL opening round game against Norwich Free Academy, 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

“This was a great game today,” Greenwich head coach Mary Beth Fratello said. “Alison [Kach] did a great job on the mound and got six strikeouts. NFA had runners in scoring position nearly every inning and Alison and our defense really came through to get us out of jams.

Big Red got both of its runs in the third inning. Rebecca Decarlo and Colleen Barrett each got things going by netting had back-to-back singles. Up next was Erin Ferguson, who laced a double that drove hom both Decarlo and Barrett.

“It’s huge for this team to win those close games because it makes us keep our head’s in the game,” Fratello said. “They are tough games to win because they are close and we can’t make mistakes. I’ve been telling the girls all year that it’s the team that makes the fewest mistakes that will win games.”

With the victory, the Lady Cardinals will hit the road Thursday afternoon and will battle Glastonbury High School at 4. Both the Cards and Tomahawks ended the regular season with a 16-5 record. Glastonbury entered this year’s tournament as the No. 8 seed and beat No. 25 seed Brien McMahon High School 6-1 in the opening round.

“It’s going to be a good game, just like our game against NFA was,” Fratello said. “If we play the way that we have all year, I think that we could make it a very exciting game.”
