Greenwich girls tennis goes indoors to blank Cheshire in class L opener

Although the weather was miserable Tuesday afternoon, that didn’t stop the Greenwich High School girls tennis team from advancing in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class L tournament.

The Lady Cardinals moved indoors to the Sound Shore tennis courts to battle Cheshire High School in the opening round. Dominating from start to finish, Greenwich blanked the Rams 7-0.

At No. 1 singles, Jenn Deluca had little trouble with Anna Toscano, beating her Cheshire opponent 6-1, 6-0. Greenwich’s Sam Stone had a similar fate at No. 2 singles, as she beat Cheshire’s Nadja Pejouil 6-2, 6-0. Keeping the good times rolling for Big Red was Anna Daccache at No. 3 singles, as she beat Sara Bruce 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out the singles competition was Hannah Kratky at No. 4 singles, as Greenwich came away with the 6-2, 6-1 victory over Cheshire’s Jaime Andrews.

It wasn’t any easier for Cheshire High School in doubles, as Greenwich swept all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the GHS duo of Julia Hyland and Julia Akerman came away with the 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cheshire’s Lindsey Garibaldi and Meredith Bryden.

At No. 2 doubles, Greenwich High’s Lizzie Griffin and Mathilde Van Tulder finished off Katie Freitag and Christy Freitag 6-2, 6-3. Finishing off the double competition was the Big Red team of Mary Cecio and Liza Johnson, as they upended Durga Rathi and Amanda Murray 6-1, 6-1.

With the victory, Greenwich will play the winner of the Daniel Hand and New Canaan High School battle. Although the match was started Tuesday, their game was suspended due to rain. Both NCHS and Hand will travel to Greenwich High School to finish their match later today at noon. The winner will advance to play the Lady Cardinals later in the day.
