A plethora of Greenwich athletic teams ready to tackle CIAC playoffs today

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference is kicking its spring postseason into high gear today and Greenwich High School will be a apart of the action.

The Big Red baseball team, seeded third in the class LL playoffs will start its postseason at home today with a game against No. 30 seed Cheshire High School at 3:30 p.m.

About 30 minutes later, the Greenwich High School softball team will start play in its class LL tournament at home as well. The Lady Cardinals, who earned the N0. 9 seed in the tourney, will host No. 24 seed Norwich Free Academy in the first round. This game is the first time in close to a decade that Greenwich softball has hosted a CIAC state playoff game.

Up at Cardinal Stadium, the GHS girls lacrosse team will be starting play in the class L tournament. The No. 4 seeded Lady Cardinals, who netted a regular season record of 13-2, will host Newtown High School at 4:30.

Starting the busy day in athletics for Greenwich High School will be the girls tennis team. With a 15-1 regular season record, Greenwich is the second seed in class L and will host Cheshire High School at 3 p.m. on the GHS tennis courts.

Rounding out the day at Greenwich High School will be the GHS boys volleyball team. Netting a 12-5 regular season record and the No. 7 spot in the 13-team class L tournament, the Cardinals will host No. 10 seed Xavier High School at 5 p.m. in the GHS gymnasium. The winner will go on to play at second-seeded Ridgefield High School, who got a first-round bye, in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at 6.

Although they aren’t going to be playing at home, the Greenwich High School rugby team will be playing for the Connecticut state championship. Big Red, fresh off an appearance in the High School Rugby National Championship Invitational, will be taking on Fairfield Prep at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
