Greenwich High lacrosse upends top-seeded Ridgefield to advance to FCIAC finals

Although the Greenwich High School boys lacrosse team was playing top-seeded Ridgefield High School in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinals, the same team that beat the Cardinals 10-5 to start the season in early April, Big Red wasn’t intimidated.

Greenwich High took a 3-2 halfime lead during Tuesday night’s semis played at McMahon’s Jack Casagrande Field, and held on for the thrilling 6-5 victory.

The Cardinals got two goals each from the trio of Alex Moeser, Luke Finneran and Kyle Foote. Finneran’s second goal of the game was the difference maker, as he found the back of the net with only 3:40 to play in the game to give GHS the 6-5 lead. Big Red goalie William Waesche kept the Tigers at bay the rest of the way and made a huge save on Brett Baker in the closing seconds of the game.

With the victory, Greenwich improved to 15-4 on the season and will play for the FCIAC championship Friday night at 7 against New Canaan High School. In the early game, the Rams were able to upend the Blue Wave 5-3.
