Greenwich High boys, girls tracksters fare well at FCIAC championships

The Greenwich High School boys and girls outdoor track and field teams had a meet to remember, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Competing in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship meet at Danbury High School, both the boys and girls head coaches had nothing to complain about.

With a team loaded with depth for the first time in quite awhile, the Greenwich High boys track team finished FCIACs fifth overall with 53 points, three points better than sixth-place Norwalk High School. Staples won the championship with 128 points, followed by Danbury taking second with 97 points. Ridgefield netted the bronze with 90 points and Darien finished fourth in 64 points.

“When you look at the teams ahead of us, they are the team that are usually at the top,” Greenwich boys head coach Tom Aderle said. “We had some great performances today. We have people competing in almost every event, which is something that usually doesn’t happen for the boys team. We did beyond my expectations and I am very happy for them and the Greenwich program.”

On the girls side, the Lady Cardinals had another stellar outing, finishing FCIACs fourth overall with 59.50 points, over six points better than fifth place Danbury High School. The Staples’ girls team also won the FCIAC finals, netting 100.50 points, while Darien took second with 96.50 points. Ridgefield captured the bronze and grabbed 91 points.

“In my eight years working track and field at Greenwich High School, this is by far the deepest team that we ever had,” GHS girls head coach Evan Dubin said. “For the first time in my career here, we were able to place someone in every single event at the FCIAC meet, which is huge. To have that hurdle covered is a nice aspect. Where we expected to do well, we did really well today.”
