Busy day for Greenwich area varsity teams competing in FAA, FCIAC playoffs

The regular season for spring athletics has come to an end and it’s now time for some postseason runs for varsity teams in Greenwich.

For Greenwich High School, the Cardinals will have a handful of teams competing in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs. Both the GHS baseball and softball teams start quarterfinal action later today. The Cardinals’ baseball team, ranked No. 1 in the FCIAC tournament, will be hosting Staples High School at 4 p.m.

Making a long-awaited return to the FCIAC playoffs, the No. 5 seeded GHS softball team will be on the road and will battle No. 4 seeded Darien High School today at 4.

After a 17-12 victory over Ridgefield High School in the FCIAC quarterfinals, the No. 3 seeded Greenwich High girls lacrosse team will return to action today at 5:15 p.m. when they travel to Dunning Field at play No. 2 New Canaan High School in the semis. The winner of the game will earn a trip to the FCIAC title game and will play either No. 5 seeded Danbury High School or top-seeded Darien High School.

Also competing in the FCIAC semifinals will be the Greenwich High School girls tennis team. After blitzing Ridgefield High School 7-0 in the FCIAC opener, Big Red, ranked No. 1 in the tourney, will host No. 4 seeded New Canaan High School today at 4 p.m. The winner will punch its ticket to the FCIAC title game in Wilton on Wednesday and will battle either No. 2 Fairfield Ludlowe or No. 3 Staples High School.

Greenwich Academy will have four teams in action today competing for the Fairchester Athletic Association tournaments. The GA golf team, fresh off its New England championship, will be competing in the FAA championship event at Round Hill Country Club at 3 p.m.

At the same time, the Greenwich Academy tennis team will be battling in the FAA doubles championship.

The Gators’ lacrosse team, top-seed in the FAA tourney, will host Hamden Hall Country Day School in the semifinal round today at 3:30 p.m. Not to be outdone is the GA softball team, as they will be on the road today at 3:45 p.m. and battle King School in the FAA semis.

For Convent of the Sacred Heart, three teams wille trying to catch playoff fever. The CSH lacrosse team will compete in the FAA semifinals and will battle Greens Farms Academy at home at 4:30 p.m.

The Tigers’ tennis team will be competing in the FAA doubles tennis championships today at 2 p.m., while the CSH golf squad will be at the FAA championship at the Round Hill Country Club at 3.
