Phyllis Andrews, 89, longtime resident, independent spirit

Phyllis Camp Andrews, 89, died after a brief nursing facility stay on May 6 from congestive heart failure.

Ms. Andrews was born June 6, 1923, in Fort Ethan Allen, Vt., and since 1990 she had lived with what her family called “a fierce independence” at her Greenwich home.

The daughter of a military father, she grew up in several states, including Vermont, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. From 1937 to 1939 she lived off-base in a home near both the beach and Schofield Barracks on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, before moving to Pittsfield, Mass., where she met her eventual husband, David V. Andrews, and graduated from Pittsfield High School.

Before marrying, she attended Louisiana State University, graduating at the top of her class. She then worked as a dietitian at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital. After marrying her husband upon his return from serving in the Pacific during World War II, she lived in a Quonset hut complex close to Yale’s campus specifically reserved for married students until Mr. Andrews graduated and they moved to East Orange, N.J. From there she commuted to work as a dietitian at New York City’s Roosevelt Hospital until her first son was born.

In the early 1950s the family moved to Hastings-on-Hudson, where they lived until 1976, raising three boys. In Hastings, Ms. Andrews was active within the PTA and the Literature Club. Her many charitable efforts included stints as UNICEF coordinator, Fair Housing Committee participation and much volunteer work for the Andrus Memorial Home.

In 1976, Mr. Andrews  became president and CEO of Stamford’s Fidelity Trust Co., and Ms. Andrews moved with him to Stamford. While there she reignited her career, working full-time as a diet technician for Greenwich Hospital until she retired in 1989 and moved to Greenwich. Once retired, Ms. Andrews would still travel to the Stamford Y until she was 80-years-old, swimming one mile every day.

She is survived by three sons, Edward D. Andrews of the Bronx, N.Y., Garrett V. Andrews of Woodstock, N.Y., and Peter M. Andrews and his wife, Teresa, of Lisbon, Portugal, as well as two grandchildren, Tomas and Sofia Andrews, also of Lisbon. The family has requested that any charitable contributions be directed toward the American Cancer Society.
