Wilton gives Greenwich girls tennis a scare, but Cards pull out the 4-3 victory

It was far from easy yesterday afternoon, but the Greenwich High School girls tennis team was able to pull out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Wilton High School.

Greenwich was able to split the singles competition with the Warriors, but got the victory when two of its three doubles teams scored huge victories.

At No. 2 singles, Greenwich’s Sam Stone pulled out a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory over Wilton’s Brooke Connolly. GHS kept the good times rolling at No. 3 singles, as Anna Daccache was able to upend Allie Schaefer 6-4, 6-4.

In a battle of top No. 1 singles players in the FCIAC, it was Wilton’s Maddie Stow that was able to grab a victory against Big Red’s Jenn Deluca, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The Warrior took another victory at No. 4 singles, as Sammy Augenbraun topped Greenwich’s Hannah Kratky 7-6, 6-1.

In doubles, no one was better than the GHS duo of Julia Ackerman and Julia Hyland, as they scored a solid 6-0, 6-3 victory over Wilton’s Maya Srivastava and Vaviera Fiol 6-0, 6-3. In dramatic come-from-behind fashion, the Greenwich duo of Mary Cecio and Liza Johnson fell 6-1 in their opening set against Hannah Montgomery and Kaitlyn Zheng, but were able to grab the 7-5 victory in the second set and 6-1 clincher in the third.
