Brunswick baseball uses three-run first inning to slay Dragons 4-0

The Brunswick School baseball team got back on its winning ways earlier today in Westport, traveling to Greens Farms Academy and coming away with the 4-0 victory over the Dragons.

The Bruins came out of the gates strong, scoring three of its four runs in the first inning. Brunswick added another run in the top of the fifth inning to ice the game.

Ryan Hardin started the game by lacing a triple to right field and was sacrificed home when Sam Fraser hit a fly ball. Just like Hardin did to start the game, Ryan Popp did two batters later, smacking a triple to right field and was able to score a batter later when Nick Kono hit a sac fly.

Up next was Billy O’Malley, who hit a single to right field and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Greens Farms’ defense. Justin Cedeno came up next and hit a single to center that easily plated O’Malley.

After reaching base on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning, O’Malley advanced to third on a line drive single by Cedeno. During Chris Hart’s at bat, the GFA pitcher uncorked a wild pitch and O’Malley was able to score the final run of the game on that play.

The Brunswick offense gave starting pitcher Will O’Brien more than enough to work with. Brunswick’s O’Brien had a dominating game on the mound. In seven innings of work, O’Brien gave up only five hits and two walks while striking out six batters. O’Brien gave up two singles in the second inning, a single in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
