Greenwich High girls tennis beats Fairfield Warde, 5-2

The Greenwich High School girls tennis team traveled up to Fairfield Warde High School and came away with the convincing 5-2 victory over the Mustangs yesterday afternoon.

The Cardinals were able to sweep the singles competition, netting all four wins on the day. At No. 1 singles was Jenn Deluca, who beat Warde’s Jenny Schneider, 6-1, 6-0. Not to be outdone was Big Red’s Sam Stone, who upended Emily Simonds, 6-2, 6-0. Playing at No. 3 singles was Greenwich’s Anna Daccache, who finished off Warde’s Mackenzie Burns, 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the singles competition was Greenwich’s Liza Johnson, who came away with the hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 victory over Fairfield’s Emily Schmerzler. Usually Johnson is paired at No. 3 doubles, but Maggie Glynn filled in at that spot so Johnson could replace an injured player on the GHS roster.

When it came to doubles, nobody on Greenwich was better than the team of Mary Cecio and Glynn, who beat Warde’s Morgan Wolf and Morgan Miller, 6-3, 6-4.

Fairfield Warde got its two victories on the day at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The team of Erin Hines and Megan Hines were able to beat Greenwich’s Julia Hyland and Julia Ackerman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Netting the Mustangs’ other victory was the duo of Ashley Aufiero and Hannah Greenhall, who upended Big Red’s Lizzie Griffin and Mathilde Van Tulder 6-4, 6-4.
