The Brunswick School crew team traveled to Lake Washinee Saturday and successfully defended the Richard Curtis Trophy (by a three-second margin) against a fast, physically imposing crew from Salisbury.

The Richard Curtis Trophy was started in 2006 and was awarded to winner of the annual battle between Salisbury and the Bruins. The first two years of the trophy, Brunswick was victorious. Salisbury took home the trophy in 2008. Although the Bruins regained the Richard Curtis Trophy in 2009, Salisbury kept the trophy in 2010 and 2011 before Brunswick recaptured the hardware in 2011.

This time around, it was the Bruins that won three of the four races on the day. In the first Varsity-8 race, Brunswick took first with a time of 4:40.7 and were nearly four seconds faster than Salisbury. Salisbury won the second Varsity-8 race by almost 10 seconds, finishing with a time of 4:55.2. Brunswick’s time was clocked at 5:04.8.

Although the Bruins lost the second race, they dominated the rest of the way. In the third Varsity-8 race, Brunswick’s time of 5:03.5 was just under 20 seconds faster than Salisbury. In the fourth race, Brunswick had a similar result, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:22.1. Salisbury finished with a time of 5:50.0.

With the victory against Salisbury, Brunswick moved its record to 3-0 on the young season.

While the Fourth and Fifth Eights will scrimmage the Norwalk River Rowing Association on Wednesday, the varsity crews have an open date next weekend and will prepare for an important race in Providence against Nortfield Mount Herman, Stonington and Tabor on April 27.
