Students recently battled it out at the North Mianus School Spelling Bee final on Jan. 31.

The competition was stiff but after 22 rounds of intense word sparring two winners emerged. Fifth grader Alasdair Fletcher, 10, and fourth grader Valerie Zhang, nine, came first and second respectively and went on to represent the school at the regional bee in Danbury on March 7.

Fifth grader Andrew Alford, 10, who came in third and fourth grader Mark Chen, nine, who came in fourth will stand as alternates. The four word enthusiasts along with third grader Neha Iyler, who tied fourth place, trained as Team NMS.

Dace Ashcraft, the teacher in charge said, “North Mianus is developing a community of real ‘word-lovers.’ These kids are already very dedicated and enthusiastic. I predict within a few years, if not sooner, we will be watching one on television at the Scripps National Bee.”
