Greenwich High girls tennis falls to rival New Canaan, 4-3

Another girls tennis match with New Canaan High School and another close contest. This time, the Rams got the better of Greenwich High School yesterday afternoon, as Big Red fell in a hard-fought 4-3 decision.

The Cardinals won three of the four singles matches on the day. Jen Deluca took care of New Canann’s Jensen Lee at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. Not to be outdone was Sam Stone, who finished off NCHS No. 2 singles player Kate Howard 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, Anna Daccache had a tough contest with Emily Brand. Although she fell 3-6 in the opening set, Daccache came back and won her second set 6-2 and the third and deciding set 6-3.

New Canaan won No. 4 singles, as Caroline Gordon defeated Greenwich’s Hannah Kratky in a evenly-contested match 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

The Rams were able to pull out the team victory with its stellar doubles play, as New Canaan swept all three doubles matches. Big Red’s Julia Hyland and Julia Ackerman fell to Sara Greene and Kristin Laub 6-3, 6-4. Greenwich didn’t fare much better in No. 2 doubles, as Mathilde Van Tulder and Lizzie Griffin were defeated by New Canaan’s Amanda Merjian and SArah Lovejoy 6-0, 6-3.

Big Red’s Lena Schipper and Leija Johnson won their first set at No. 3 doubles 6-0, but then it was all New Canaan the rest of the way, as Guiliana Savini and Emma Gruber won the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.
