The Brunswick Rowing team opened its 2013 season with a strong showing against crews from Tabor Academy and Pomfret School.

Brunswick won the Varsity Eights race and three of the four lower boat races. With the wins, the Bruins won the Brunswick/Tabor Cup, a team points trophy contested annually between the two programs. In 2012, Tabor took second in the New England Championships and Brunswick had not beaten Tabor at the Varsity Eight level since 2009.

The Bruins’ Varsity Eight included seniors Tobin Saer, John Mayberry, Matt Podlesak, Corey Okinaka and Sean Forester, as well as juniors Max and Alex Skolds, sophomore Matt Marvin, and freshman Will Bass (senior varsity oarsman Alex Durkin was held out due to injury).

The Bruins took a lead off the line and were able to stay in front the entire way, though with only 500 meters to go in the race the Seawolves pulled within one seat (about four feet) of the lead. However, Brunswick remained poised and were able to eventually stretch out the margin to win by 3.8 seconds — almost one boat length ahead of Tabor.

Wins were also recorded by the Freshmen Eight and the Third and Fourth Eights; all three of those Brunswick crews won by significant margins. Tabor earned its lone win at the Second Varsity Eight level besting the Bruins by 6.6 seconds into a challenging headwind, while Pomfret took third place.

The Brunswick crew team will visit rival Salisbury School next Saturday to contest the Richard Curtis Trophy with races starting at 2:30 p.m.
