Parade organizers say thank you

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

On behalf of the Greenwich Hibernian Association, sponsor of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade held March 17, I feel that the event went smoothly thanks to the Police Department, under the direction of Chief James Heavey, our Grand Marshal for 2012.

Also thanks to the traffic division, who safely managed the large crowds.

Each year the Parks and Recreation Department, under the guidance of Frank Gabriele, go beyond the call of duty to ensure a successful parade. First Selectman, Peter Tesei made sure that we had the cooperation of all the town departments necessary in the planning of the parade. Our thanks to Selectmen David Theis and Drew Marzullo, who are strong supporters and to Mr. Theis and Wells Fargo for the beautiful horses.

Thank you to Monsignor Frank C. Wissel, and the staff at St. Mary Church for helping with Mass and the brunch arrangements. And a big thank you to our 2013 Grand Marshal William Connolly for graciously accepting and carrying out the position with dignity and pride.

Thanks to the parade committee volunteers: John Kavanagh, Treasurer; James Dougherty, Esq., Publicity; and Haydn O’Shea, Master of Ceremonies, and also to John Halpin, Mary McNamee, Annette Scanlon and Liz Halpin. A special thanks to Irene Stewart for her contribution.

A beautiful ending to the parade was provided by the beautiful voice of Kimberly Maguire singing the Irish and American National Anthems.

Thanks to WGCH Radio, The Mary Anne Show, Greenwich Patch, Greenwich Post, Greenwich Citizen, Greenwich Time, 95.9 The Fox, Stat. 99.9 and News 12 for getting advance notice to the public and their excellent articles and pictures.

Even though we are volunteers, a parade this size is costly so a big thanks to our loyal followers who generously respond to our annual appeal. Thanks to all of you who marched with us. Some organizations have marched in the parade since its inception 39 years ago.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club, our unsung heroes, under the direction of Nick Edwards and his fantastic committee. They managed to assemble the 2,000 plus marchers and various vehicles in the Town Hall parking lot and then disburse them in an orderly fashion, according to script.

It was a fine parade because of all of you. We look forward to seeing you at the 40th parade on March 23, 2014.

Thank you and may St. Patrick bless you.
