Coast Guard offers boat safety courses

Just in time for boating season, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 78 has announced About Boating Safety classes to take place in Cos Cob on April 6 and 28.

About Boating Safety is an eight-hour course that meets the Connecticut boating education requirement for boaters. Many insurance companies offer discounts on boat insurance policies for individuals who have completed a safe boating course.

Topics covered in the course consist of an introduction to boating, boat safety equipment, aids to navigation and boating law. Also covered are potential boating problems, safe boating procedures, and advice on personal water craft such as kayaks and boards. There is also an emphasis on correct trailering of small boats.

The cost of the course is $75 per person. All training materials are included. As each class is limited in the number of participants, advanced reservations are required. For registration information, interested readers may call Linda at 203-661-4033 ext. 200 or e-mail Cos Cob Flotilla 78 at flotilla [email protected]

Flotilla 78 is the Greenwich arm of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is based in Cos Cob at the Greenwich Water Club, located on River Road at Beacon Point Marine. Its members are active in the varied education and boating programs of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, with a strong emphasis on boating safety and public education.

About Boating Safety will be held Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
