Program spotlights widows

Perrot Memorial Library will welcome author Becky Aikman whose book, Saturday Night Widows, delves into six marriages, six heartbreaks, and one shared beginning on April 3.

After being widowed in her 40’s, Ms. Aikman struggled to find her place in an altered world. Ultimately, she formed a group with five other young widows, who initially were strangers with only one thing in common — their husbands had died. For a year, they met once a month, usually Saturday nights, in their own amateur support group. Together these friends discovered how people experience grief, transcend loss, summon humor and strive to find the spirit essential to overcome adversity.

Kirkus Review called this memoir “engaging and entertaining but not maudlin … a compassionate narrative about how one group of friends helped each other thrive.”

A graduate of the School of Journalism at Columbia University, Ms. Aikman was a writer and editor for Business Week and a reporter for Newsday. Saturday Night Widows is her first book. She lives in New York City. The event takes place April 3 at 7:30 p.m.
