Comical author to speak at Christ Church

It has often been declared that only the truth is funny. So that may explain why Christ Church Greenwich members say New York Times best-selling author Anne Lamott leaves them in stitches at every discussion and with every book she writes.

With her straightforward style, they added, Ms. Lamott “courageously explores the real life hopes and troubles many prefer to leave hidden.”

Her willingness to expose challenges in a narrative voice that Newsday called, “consistently lively and smart and funny” never fails to inspire. And her honesty about topics like alcoholism, motherhood and Jesus is said to be “somehow both heartbreaking and refreshing.”

As part of the Courage and Faith series at Christ Church Greenwich, Ms. Lamott will speak on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. The talk, which focuses on her latest book Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers, will include audience Q&A and a book signing to follow in the newly renovated Christ Church Bookstore and Espresso Bar on the lower level of their central Greenwich campus.

Ms. Lamott is the author of seven novels, as well as five best-selling non-fiction books including, Operating Instructions, an account of life as a single mother during her son’s first year, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, a guide to writing and the challenges of a writer’s life and Traveling Mercies, a collection of autobiographical essays on faith.

The New York Times said of the author, “Lamott is a narrator who has relished and soaked up the details of her existence, equally of mirth and devastation, and spilled them onto her pages.”

Ms. Lamott has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, and has taught at UC Davis, as well as at writing conferences across the country. Her biweekly Salon Magazine online diary, Word by Word, was voted The Best of the Web by TIME magazine. Additionally, filmmaker and Academy Award winner Freida Mock made a documentary about Ms. Lamott called Bird by Bird with Annie.

Tickets for the March 2 talk are $20, and available online only, with all general seating. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. There will be no advanced seat reservations available. After the talk and audience Q&A in the main church sanctuary, Ms. Lamott will be signing books in the bookstore, which is toward the back of the main parking lot.

Christ Church Greenwich is located at 254 E. Putnam Avenue. For tickets go to For questions contact Christ Church Greenwich at 203-869-6600.
