Entering the final week of the regular season, the Greenwich High School boys basketball team has its destiny in its own hands.
Already assured of a spot in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL playoffs, the Cardinals are looking to qualify for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament, which gets underway Saturday at noon.
Currently Greenwich is tied with Bridgeport Central and Stamford high schools with an 9-7 conference record. With Big Red falling to Central 61-45 back on Jan. 24, the Hilltoppers hold the tiebreaker against GHS. However, Greenwich opened its season on Dec. 14 with a 61-50 victory over Stamford, which means Big Red currently holds the tiebreaker over the Black Knights and the seventh spot in the FCIAC playoff race.
While Greenwich is in the FCIAC tournament if the season ended today, the Cardinals still have a lot of work to do. It's final two games are against two teams barely on the outside of the tournament looking in.
"Simply put, these are the two biggest games of these kid's careers," Greenwich High head coach Bill Brehm said. "We would like to get (Alejandro) Rodriguez and (Greg) Donlic to experience the FCIAC playoff atmosphere before they graduate."
Tonight at 6, Greenwich travels to Fairfield Warde High School for a game against the Mustangs. On Wednesday, Greenwich is traveling up north to Danbury for its regular season finale against the Hatters at 7.
Both the Hatters and Mustangs currently have a 8-8 overall record and are tied for ninth in the conference, along with Fairfield Ludlowe, Staples and Trumbull.
While Greenwich has the tiebreaker against Staples, beating them 41-40 seven days ago and Ludlowe, beating them 55-40 on Dec. 16, Trumbull came away with the one-point victory (53-52) back on Feb. 3.
"It's nice to control our own destiny, but it won't be easy with those two teams on their courts," Brehm said. "We would like to get a home game for the state tourney as well and two wins should secure that. We will be playing a senior laden Warde squad, so we need to play our best game of the year."
Trumbull High finishes is regular season against Fairfield Ludlowe tonight at 7 and then hosts Trinity Catholic High School, currently 12-4 in the conference and tied for a No. 2 seed, on Wednesday.
After Ludlowe battles the Golden Eagles tonight, they finish the regular season Wednesday against 2-16 Darien High.
Tonight the Wreckers travel to McMahon for a game against the 3-15 Senators, however have to travel to Bridgeport for a game against Bassick for its regular season finale. Bassick is currently tied for second in the conference with a 12-4 record.
Whatever the playoff scenarios are, Greenwich has the luxury of making things very easy. If they win both games, they are in the FCIAC playoffs.
