Dr. Stephen L. Derkash, a former Greenwich doctor, World War II veteran and father of a Darien resident, died at his home in Vero Beach, Fla., on Dec. 13. He was 101.
Born in Nanticoke, Pa., on Oct. 10, 1910, he served as a family doctor in Greenwich for 35 years before retiring to Vero Beach in 1982. While in Greenwich he served as president of the Greenwich Medical Society.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he earned a PhD from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and his MD from the Hahnemann Medical College.
Dr. Derkash was a war hero, landing in the first hour on Utah Beach during the World War II invasion of Normandy. For heroic action as a Navy Medic he was awarded the Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen Derkash; sons, Bruce Derkash of Tucson, Ariz., and Dr. Robert Derkash of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; by daughters Judith Hollander of Bethel, Ark., and Nancy Hanson of Darien; and by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at on Monday, Dec. 19, at Holy Cross Church in Vero Beach. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach.
