James Lunney, retired Greenwich detective; memorial service on Saturday

James J. Lunney, Jr., a retired Greenwich Police Department detective, has died, the GPD reported earlier this week. He was 69. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church on Greenwich Ave. There are no calling hours.

Detective Lunney started employment with the GPD on Oct. 21, 1963 and retired 23 and a half years later, in May 1987.

A longtime resident of Stamford, he served in both the patrol and traffic divisions. He was promoted to detective in 1973 and worked with Frank Garr as an undercover narcotics officer. Detectives Lunney and Garr were John A. Clarke award recipients in 1982 and cited for “opening 58 drug cases in the previous year and making 54 arrests as a result of their investigations.”

The office of Chief of Police James Heavey said: “We join all members of the department in extending our sincere sympathy to the Lunney family.”
