Gibbons will not run for new term

After six terms in office, State Rep. Lile Gibbons (R-150) announced Wednesday night that it was time to step away and that she would not be going for lucky number seven.

Ms. Gibbons made the announcement before the Greenwich Republican Town Committee who thanked her for her service with a standing ovation. Ms. Gibbons was first elected to the state legislature in 2000 after serving as chairman of the Board of Education. She won her seat narrowly after a tightly contested Republican primary and ironically never faced a challenge again, running unopposed for all of her general elections.

“I’ve had a seat in the front row of democracy,” Ms. Gibbons said. “Politics, civics and diplomacy have been part of my daily fare and it’s been exciting and rewarding to participate.”

An emotional Ms. Gibbons thanked her the voters and colleagues and reminded everyone that she would be still be in office for the rest of her term through this coming November she was not stopping any of her work.

This sets up what could well be a hot contest for the fall. Republicans are expected to have multiple candidates express interest in running for the seat and Democratic Town Committee Chairman Frank Farricker has pledged that Democrats will have a candidate running as well. Democrats have not been able to send a representative to Hartford in close to 100 years but stand a far better chance with an open seat than against the popular Ms. Gibbons.
