In what has become an annual event, students in the Hamilton Avenue schools’ third, fourth and fifth grades buckled down and went to work solving math equations and word problems, all in an effort to raise money for St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.
“This is a great way for students to practice their math skills and do something great for others at the same time,” said Mrs. Byrnes. “I love that the students were able to have fun, learn something, and in doing so, were able to reach out to those in need.”
The students’ hard work and effort paid off beyond anyone’s expectations as the kids broke their own record of $7,361 set during last years event, surpassing it by more than $1,500 raising a total of $8,867. All of the money raised was sent to St. Jude’s Hospital.
Leading the charge for a second consecutive year, was top money raiser, fifth grader Jack Caruso with $645. The second highest money raiser was fourth grader, Max Pisacreta who raised $532. There was a tie for the third highest earner, shared by fifth graders, Kaltrin Ugrinaj and Ryleigh McCarthy who each raised $500. Each student will be recognized and presented with awards during a television broadcast on the schools’ in-house student-run T.V. station, WHAM-TV, in the coming weeks.
Located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is one of the world’s premier cancer research centers.
