Local programs receive federal funding

The federal budget for 2012, recently enacted in Washington D.C., includes over $2.5 million in Older Americans Act funding that will help to support local programs in southwestern Connecticut that are available for those age 60 and older. In southwestern Connecticut these funds, along with matching funds from the State of Connecticut, are managed and distributed by the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging and Independent Living (SWCAA).

In Greenwich programs receiving Older Americans Act funds include:

• Greenwich Adult Day Care providing scholarship for some clients to attend the adult day program

• Supermarketing for Seniors providing volunteers to grocery shop for homebound Greenwich seniors, sponsored by Jewish Family Services of Greenwich

Other funded programs available to Greenwich seniors include:

• Dental Services at Dental Center of Stamford in the Franklin Street Community Health Center

• Family & Children’s Agency’s Senior Carpenter program which can provide small home repairs and alterations to enable seniors to remain safely in their homes.

• Scholarship funds for Family & Children’s Agency’s personal emergency response program.

• Assisted Transportation provided by Family & Children’s Agency for those who could use a little extra help with trips to medical appointments or the grocery store

• In-Home Services including homemaker and bath aide services, Family & Children’s Agency

• Elderly Hispanic programs, social services, and assistance with translation at the Stamford Senior Center sponsored by Catholic Charities

• The Elder Abuse Prevention Center at the Jewish Home for the Elderly providing elder abuse information, counseling, and shelter for elderly abuse victims.

• Legal Services for low-income elderly provided by Connecticut Legal Services, a non-profit civil law firm dedicated to helping low-income families and individuals obtain justice

• Family Caregiver Respite and Supplemental Services available through SWCAA

In 2011 more than 150 Greenwich residents participated in these programs. There are no fees charged for programs receiving these funds but all programs gratefully accept donations from participants who are able to contribute.
