The town of Greenwich is offering free income tax assistance three days a week at Town Hall through April 12.
The program is part of a nationwide program run by the AARP and is operated locally by the Greenwich Retired Men’s Association (RMA). Tax returns are prepared by certified volunteers who have been through a training program and passed the required tests administered by the IRS. To ensure accuracy, when completed, each return is checked by another preparer.
Each year several hundred Greenwich residents and workers avail themselves of this free service. Returns are filed electronically. State tax returns are prepared for both Connecticut and New York. The assistance is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 10 and 2:30. Filers are asked to bring their W-2’s,1099’s, any paperwork related to income or expenses including real estate and automobile taxes paid, last year’s tax returns, both federal and state, and the amount of any refunds received and identification such as Social Security card or driver’s license. Those who wish any refund to be directly deposited should bring their bank account information. For married couples filing jointly, both will have to sign return.
