Jazz quartet plays gospel in Greenwich

Continuing an annual tradition, the Eric Mintel Quartet will perform “An Evening of Outstanding Jazz” this Saturday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at Second Congregational Church at 139 E. Putnam Ave. It will also take part in the worship service Sunday, Jan. 22, at 10:30 a.m.

Returning to the church for the ninth time, the Pennsylvania-based quartet will follow its Jan. 21 concert with a meet-and-greet reception. Free-will donations are suggested. The quartet will perform with the church’s Chancel Choir on Jan. 22.

Mr. Mintel, a pianist and composer, formed the Eric Mintel Quartet in 1993. The quartet’s concerts feature the rarely heard sacred choral music of Duke Ellington, as well as selections by Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mercer and Mr. Mintel himself.

The quartet has played venues from the White House to major jazz festivals and has opened for Mr. Brubeck. Mr. Mintel has been featured in “Down Beat Jazz Magazine” and been a guest on “Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz” on NPR.

Reservations are recommended for the Jan. 21 concert.
