How is it that in 21st Century there are still women in the world unable to go to school because of something so commonplace as getting one's period? Why is the second most costly item in a Kenyan woman's life sanitary pads — second only to bread?

The Greenwich-based organization ZanaAfrica is trying to address these issues, teaching health and sanitary education and providing technology to these women to help to pull them out of poverty.

Gov. Dan Malloy has announced plans to shake up the state's liquor laws — some of which date to the Prohibition era — in an effort to give a jolt to the state economy.

The two major parts of the law would allow for the sale of alcohol on Sundays, certain holidays and on Mondays that come after Sunday holidays, and the elimination of minimum pricing with the aim of driving down costs for consumers.

We believe straight up that this a welcome change that would lift Connecticut out of Boardwalk Empire days and bring it into the 21st Century. Gov. Malloy cited statistics that Connecticut wine and liquor retailers may be losing as much as $570 million in sales each year to surrounding states because of blue law policy. That number, coupled with the lingering hangover of the Great Recession, should be reason enough to back his proposed legislation to be introduced in the next session.

Area religious organizations and outreach agencies serving men and women who are homeless are planning a service and vigil on the longest night of the year, Dec. 21. The Interfaith Council of Southwestern Connecticut and community service providers, including Continuum of Care of Stamford and Greenwich, will hold the event “to remember those who have died homeless during the past year,” according to a news release.

The vigil will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the First Congregational Church of Stamford, One Walton Place (at Bedford and Prospect Streets), outside the church at the Bedford Street entrance and proceed indoors.

The interfaith service, which includes readings, prayers, and uplifting music, is described as “both a time of remembrance and a celebration of hope.” Wayne Staggs, music director at Faith Missionary Tabernacle Baptist Church in Stamford, will lead a choir which includes shelter residents and the recently homeless. Members of local groups serving the homeless will read poetry, and artwork from clients will be displayed in the church following the hour-long service.
