Dear Larry,
How do I remove an icon from my desktop?
Point your mouse at the icon and right-click, left-click on Delete, and when asked to confirm the deletion, left-click Yes.
The folder I’m looking at contains a file I’d like to delete. How would you delete it?
Point your mouse at the icon and right-click, left-click on Delete, and when asked to confirm the deletion, left-click Yes.How do I rename my document?
Point your mouse at the document icon and right-click, left-click on Rename, type in a new name for the document, and press Enter. (Be sure the document isn’t currently in use within a program like Word.)
When I right-click an icon, I don’t always see the Rename or Delete choices. How come?
You probably moved your mouse while you were right-clicking. Try again.
Can I delete/rename my document without closing my program?
Yes. First, close the document if you currently have it open. Then click on File, Open (in the program’s menu bar at the top). Locate the file, right-click it with your mouse, and take it from there.
How do I create a folder?
Right-click the Windows desktop or the white space of a folder window where you want your new folder to appear, left-click on New, then left-click on Folder, type in a name for your new folder, and press Enter.
How can I move a file into another folder?
If both the file and the folder are visible, simply left-click and drag the file on top of the folder and “drop” it in (by letting go of the mouse button). Otherwise, right-click the file you want to move, then left-click Cut. Next, right-click the destination folder, then left-click Paste.
How can I make a copy of my file?
Hold down the Ctrl key while you click and drag the file. Or, if you prefer, right-click the file icon and left-click Copy. Then, right-click the white space of a folder and left-click Paste.
How do I move a file or folder icon to my desktop without actually moving the file or folder?
Right-click the file or folder icon and left-click Copy. Then right-click (a blank portion of) the desktop and left-click Paste Shortcut.
Every so often when I’m working in Microsoft Word, my typing overwrites the text that’s already there. How can I fix this so that my typing is inserted?
Press the Insert key on your keyboard (usually located above and to the right of the Enter key).
How much free space is left on my hard drive?
Open the My Computer icon, right-click the hard drive icon (usually labeled “C:”), and left-click on Properties.
Why do you always end your column with “This is Larry Schneider, logging off?”
I don’t.
