Greenwich Catholic School students were recently tuned in to the origins of music with a presentation by Dennis Waring from Young Audiences Arts for Learning.

Mr. Waring uses a wide array of instruments, indigenous and homemade, and weaves fun, fascinating tales of the origin of music and how, through time, all cultures utilized their natural environments for making wonderful sound-making devices.

The assembly was a demonstration and performance of almost 50 handmade and homemade musical instruments based on ideas and inspirations from around the world. Interesting signs, sounds and stories provided the audience with a new awareness of folklore, music, craft and science.

Citing “extraordinary” work by Metro-North, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday that the New Haven...

Citing “extraordinary” work by Metro-North, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday that the New Haven Line should be fully operational by Wednesday morning’s commute.

That would restore service less than four days after one train derailed and was struck by another, heading in the opposite direction, shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, May 17.

Commissioner James P. Redeker of the state Department of Transportation said Amtrak service will also be fully restore Wednesday morning.

Until trains are running again, the plan used Monday remains in effect for Tuesday, May 21. That means a mix of limited rail service and shuttle buses. (The plan by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and Metro-North is available here bit.ly/11PLBLb

Rail ridership was down 81% in “the affected area” Monday, the first since the accident and resulting service disruption. Mr. Malloy, as he did Sunday, urged Connecticut residents to work from home and stay off the roads, and the City of Bridgeport opened its offices early to get cars out of rush hour. Bridgeport municipal offices will again open one hour earlier Tuesday.

The cooperation of local agencies and the MTA with the National Transportation Safety Board allowed the track to be cleared and repairs to begin quickly, Mr. Malloy said.

Mr. Malloy said Metro-North reached out to fellow rail providers, who pitched in with the equipment necessary to expedite the repair.

While some train stations were less full than usual, highway traffic did not astronomically increase.

Mr. Malloy said backups on the Merritt Parkway were less than the average Monday, and that any increased delays on I-95 could be attributed to fog.

“If people cooperate to the extent that they did today we’ll have another great day tomorrow,” Mr. Malloy said.

The DOT has stationed extra tow trucks along major corridors to clear accidents and disabled vehicles, and Mr. Malloy said paperwork involved in accidents is being done off the road.

Connecticut’s newest rail cars are the first in the nation built to new specifications, and their performance in Friday’s derailment and subsequent collision will provide key, new information to transportation safety officials, Mr. Malloy said Monday during a 6 p.m. briefing.

Seven of the 76 people who were transported to hospitals or sought treatment on their own still admitted. One person remains in critical condition, Mr. Malloy said Monday.

This is the first time the M8 rail cars have been involved in a crash, Mr. Malloy said, increasing the level of interest from transportation safety officials.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner James. P. Redeker said these are the first cars in the U.S. manufactured to a new safety standard for “crash worthiness and protection.”

That, he and Mr. Malloy both said, raises the level of interest and curiosity on the part of government officials.

“They obviously seemed to withstand a terrific impact and protected customers,” Mr. Redeker said. “A good part of the investigation will be around this new design, the new safety standard and how the cars performed.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Mr. Malloy said federal officials, including the FBI, have indicated that all evidence points away from terrorism.

The crash appears to be a physical failure, “as opposed to operator error,” or an act of terrorism, Mr. Malloy said.

Mr. Malloy said he himself saw a piece of track dislodge and that caused the accident.

The tracks are regularly inspected and repairs are made as they are needed, Mr. Redeker said.

The No. 5 seeded Greenwich High School softball team ran into a roadblock during its return to the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference, falling to No. 4 seeded Darien High School 6-1 earlier today.

The Blue Wave scored in all but one inning while Big Red scored its lone run in the fifth inning.

During the top of fifth inning, Jenn Ambrogio started the rally with a one out single. Rebecca Decarlo came up next and hit into a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Colleen Bennett unloaded a double that drove Decarlo racing around third base and crossing home plate.

Dakota Sarcone was the other Greenwich High School player to get a hit on the day. In addition to the three hits, Erin Ferguson netted two walks.

On the mound, Alison Kach pitched a complete game and finished with one strikeout and eight walks.

On the other side of the ball, Darien’s Erika Osherow had a great day on the mound. In addition to giving up only one run, the DHS pitcher struck out five and walked four batters.

With the loss, Greenwich fell to 15-5 on the season and will be waiting to start play in next week’s Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL tournament.

The Greenwich High School girls lacrosse team fell behind 6-0 early and weren’t able to recover, falling to New Canaan High School in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinals, 14-6 earlier today at Dunning Field.

“The rhythm wasn’t there and the overall effort wasn’t there,” GHS head coach Caitlin Keane said. “I am a little disappointed with how we came out, but the second half we stayed tied with them. Imagine if we played the first half like we did the second half.”

Three of Greenwich High’s goals were scored by Carolyn Paletta, while the trio of Emme Christie, Sophie Waine and Sarah Rider each finished with one goal.

For New Canaan, Olivia Hompe led all scorers with four goals and one assist, while Eilzabeth Miller added three goals. Brianna McEwan, Isabel Taben and Katie DeMarino each finished with two goals.

“It was crucial for us to come up with those draw controls,” New Canaan head coach Kristin Woods. “I think we came up with the first six draw controls. That set the tone. Possession is everything in this game.”

With the victory, the Rams will advance to Wednesday’s FCIAC championship game. Greenwich High will wait to start play in the class L playoffs, which get underway next week. To read more on the game and to hear what Keane has to say about her team’s postseason chances, check out Thursday’s Greenwich Post.

The British are coming — in the form of rare clips presented by the Avon Theatre and Shelley Archives.

The British are coming — in the form of rare clips presented by the Avon Theatre and Shelley Archives who are set to show a Legends of Rock Live screening of The British Invasion Part 2: Rare Clips (1960s-1970s) hosted by music archivist Bill Shelley on May 22.

So many British bands had success with their music in the United States in the early 1960s through the 1970s that music critics coined the phrase “The British Invasion.” There were so many popular British artists with hit songs in America, that the Avon Theatre could not feature all of them in their original presentation of The British Invasion. Now, join them for a brand new program of different clips that celebrate more of the British groups that continue to inspire us.

Among the songs and performers who will be featured are The Troggs with Wild Thing, Traffic with Dear Mr. Fantasy, The Silkie with You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away, The Yardbirds with Over, Under, Sideways, Down, Manfred Mann with The Mighty Quinn, Yes with I’ve Seen All Good People, Jethro Tull with Aqualung, The Zombies with Time of the Season, T-Rex with Bang a Gong and many more. The sources of the clips for this compilation of British groups are promos, films and videos of live concerts, studio rehearsals and television appearances.

UPDATED MONDAY 3:45 P.M. — Train usage was down 81% Monday, as commuters faced the first workday since a derailment and collision tore apart Metro-North tracks at the Bridgeport-Fairifeld line Friday, May 17.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy told municipal leaders during a conference call that although there was a dramatic drop in the number of riders, traffic patterns remained the same.
The crash and resulting damage has forced the use of shuttle buses around the damaged track. Up to date commuter information may be found at mta.info <mta.info>
Mr. Malloy said Monday that one track has been restored, and work has been started on the second.
Due to an expected increase in automobile traffic, both tree cutting and construction on the Merritt Parkway have been suspended.
The state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be open until 8 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Malloy said he does not yet have official cost estimates, although three rail cars have been lost. Those cars will potentially be salvaged for useable parts.
Both trains involved were the new M8 cars that went into service in March 2011.
On Monday afternoon, Metro North President Howard Permut issued a statement calling the derailment a “serious occurrence” and saying that all employees were “working diligently to operate the railroad in the safest manner possible.”
“Everyone at Metro-North deeply shares the concerns of the families and friends of those involved in this tragic incident,” Mr. Permut. ”We thank the first responders who assisted with safely removing the passengers from the trains and transporting those who were injured to area hospitals. We are actively supporting the National Transportation Safety Board in conducting an exhaustive investigation that will determine the cause of the incident.”
Mr. Permut said that of the four tracks of the New Haven Line at the scene of the incident, two are out of service due to the ongoing Connecticut Department of Transportation project to replace the overhead catenary wires that provide power to the trains. Additionally the two other tracks and the overhead wires there received “extensive damage” after the derailment and collision.
“We are working to rebuild the two affected tracks in the area as quickly as possible so that we can restore regular train service to you,” Mr. Permut said. “It is a significant undertaking that will take well into this week. Metro-North has marshaled all the necessary resources, with our forces working around the clock. During this time, we thank all the municipalities affected by this situation for their support and cooperation.”
