Now comes the fun part for the Greenwich High School bowling team.
After years of just trying their hardest to get a few victories, the Cardinals have turned into a solid program. Then came last year. Greenwich was ranked No. 1 in the state and beat No. 2 ranked Notre Dame of Fairfield in the Connecticut Interscholastic Bowling League, losing the first match 953-892, but winning the second 926-885 and third 883-766.
Gone are the days of just trying to compete. Now the target is firmly on Big Red’s back and GHS head coach Wayne Gioffre wouldn’t want it any other way.
“It’s a little bit different when you have that target on your back because everybody knows you when you walk in the door,” Gioffre said. “Coming in and defending something that you want to keep puts a little more pressure on you than trying to achieve something that you haven’t achieved yet. Other teams know who we are and what we are capable of. The big thing is trying to beat the team that won it all and that was us.”
Although the team is still fired up from winning the state championship last year and a plethora of talent has returned from last year’s team, Gioffre still believes that every now and then the Cards feel the pressure.
