It’s been a long time coming, but the Greenwich High School girls basketball team is once again playoff-bound.
With the Lady Cards’ 63-38 victory over Bridgeport Central High School earlier tonight, Greenwich picked up its eighth victory of the season and qualified for the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL postseason.
“It’s a great feeling and I’m very excited,” Greenwich High head coach Chrys Hernandez said. “I told the girls that all the credit I give to them because they are the ones that put in the work, day in and day out. All that hard work paid off. We have four games left and we still want to push forward. We don’t want to be comfortable with just eight wins. We want to get more.”
Greenwich dominated the Hilltoppers from the start of the game.
Caroline Barrett led the way for Greenwich with 16 points. Not to be outdone was Jaime Kockenmeister, who finished with 15 points and added six rebounds. Leigh Galletta added six points and led Big Red with four steals. Abby Wolf also added six points, while Alexa Moses pitched in with five points. The duo of Caroline Beneville and Rebecca DeCarlo finished with four points, while Rebecca Kural, Maureen Tracey and Danielle Hernandez added two points each.
Brittany Rodriguez led the way for the Cards with nine rebounds.
“I thought we played really well,” Hernandez said. “If you look at the box score, it’s obvious that it was a complete team effort. Every one contributed and our defense was the defense in the game. I couldn’t be happier for them.”
With the victory, Greenwich improved to 8-8 on the season and will be back in action Friday against Westhill High School at 5:45, when they honor seniors Barrett, Hernandez, Tracey, Kural, Rodriguez, Danielle Raviele and Jenny Cespedes on Senior Night.
