Greenwich wrestling team crushes Hilltoppers, 68-12

The Greenwich High School wrestling team had little trouble in its match against Bridgeport Central yesterday evening at the GHS gym, winning 68-12.

Mostly all of Big Red’s victories came via pinfall. Ray Morris took care of his opponent in the 170-pound weight class with a pinfall at the 1:48 mark, while teammate Thomas Williams got a pin at the 4:34 mark of the 195-pound weight class. Not to be outdone was Alex Margeotes at 113, as it took him 1:45 to beat his opponent in the 113-pound weight class with a pin.

At 132 was Greenwich’s Ben Jones, who had a tough match against Central’s Oscar Darius, but ended up with the pinfall victory at the 5:18 mark. Up next was Big Red’s Jack Friheit at the 138-pound weight class, netting a pinfall victory 1:33 into his match.

The Cardinals also picked up several technical decisions, as Mike Gestal dominated his opponent in the 160-pound weight class and won 15-0. Same goes for Jack Benenson at 120, as he smashed his Bridgeport Central opponent with a 18-2 decision. Although it wasn’t a technical decision, Eric Tack cruised to a 13-0 victory in the 152-pound weight class.

With the victory, Greenwich upped its overall record to 10-6 and will be in action again Saturday when they compete in the Ridgefield Challenge.
