Greenwich boys & girls are champions in reading

Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich will complete its fifth graduation ceremony for the Greenwich United Way Reading Champions program on Wednesday, May 24 and Thursday, May 25 at 4 p.m. in the Clubhouse. “The Reading Champions program is adored by our members, we always fill up. We’ve tripled our participation since it started here in 2012,” said Education/Technology Coordinator Brendan Garnett.

The Greenwich United Way supports the values of Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich by providing a weekly literacy program that helps kids succeed and reach their full potential.  The Greenwich United Way Reading Champions session begins mid-October and meets until the last week in May and is available to all Club members (with a focus on elementary school aged members before fifth grade) who need extra help with their fluency in reading.

Sessions at the Club meet daily from 3:30-5:30 p.m. with tutors assigned to work individually with each child for 30 minutes. This year, the Club will graduate 38 members who worked with 17 tutors.

In partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools, since inception in 2008, Greenwich United Way Reading Champions has assisted over 3,000 children in striving to achieve individual reading goals in fluency and boasts over 4,000 volunteer hours each year.
