Kleber, Herbert win CancerCare Walk/Run for Hope

Ryan Kleber, a 16-year-old from Oakland, N.J., was the winner and Liz Herbert of Darien was the female champion in the CancerCare Walk/Run for Hope at Greenwich Point on May 5.

Kleber had a time of 18 minutes, 23 seconds over the 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) course to win by five seconds over runner-up Peter Bailey, 37, of Riverside.

Gilmar Barrios, 15, of Stamford placed third, with a time of 18:55. Jim Charlton, 43, of Riverside placed fourth with a 19:02, and Greenwich’s Bruce Semer, 46, completed the top five with a 20:20.

Herbert, 44, placed sixth overall with a 20:27. Abby Diemar, 31, was the runner-up female and 15th overall with a 23:01. Greenwich’s Jill Ramirez, 36, was the third woman and 19th overall out of the 178 finishers, with a 23:46.

Greenwich’s Ken Clisham (20:44) placed seventh, Robert Albanese (20:57) of Purchase, N.Y., was eighth, Greenwich 16-year-old George Goodfriend (21:00) took ninth, and Stamford 14-year-old Keshav Raghavan (21:02) completed the top 10.

Tim Mund (22:14) of Riverside placed 10th, Greenwich’s Michael Milby (22:23) was 11th, Terry Betteridge (22:34) of Greenwich was 12th and Darien’s Pablo Castro (22:49) was 14th. The other runners in the top 20 included Greenwich’s Andrew Yin (16th with a time of 23:28), Cos Cob’s Tristan Homewood (17th, 23:31), Greenwich’s Joe Darula (18th, 23:40), and Graham Powis (20th, 23:51) of Greenwich.

The Walk/Run for Hope raised funds to support CancerCare’s professional support services in Connecticut. The programs are offered free of charge to anyone affected by cancer, and include professional counseling, support groups, workshops, and financial assistance.

It was the third event of the Betteridge Greenwich Cup 2013 series that is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and hosted by Threads and Treads. Complete results are on Threadsandtreads.com.

The fourth event of the series is the 49th Annual Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run (5-mile run and Kid’s Half-Mile) at 8:15 a.m. on May 27 at Greenwich Avenue.

That is followed 11 days later by the Whole Foods Cook Your Buns (3-mile run, Kid’s Mile) at 6:30 p.m. on June 7 at Greenwich Point. More information on the series may be obtained on Threadsandtreads.com or by calling Threads & Treads at 203-661-0142.
